LESLEY PHILP

After teaching Design and Technology to 15-18 yr. old students at a local High School for 17 years, I decided to leave and concentrate full- time on my business, Contemporary Silverware. After studying silversmithing and jewellery making at teacher training college, I began working on commissioned pieces of jewellery while my family were very young.

One of my workshops is situated in the rural village of Haydon Bridge in the Tyne Valley and the other is situated in North West France. I am fortunate to live in two rural areas, which helps to provide me with inspiration for my designs. My technological and silversmithing background in which I taught for so many years also heavily influences my work. I am now enjoying using my skills to design and make original jewellery, tiaras and silverware in sterling silver and gold for my own business. Often within my work I incorporate semi-precious stones, pearls and natural materials but also enjoy exploring ideas with unusual textures and finishes. My aim is to design jewellery that is wearable and silverware that is usable but also keep its originality. My work is assayed at Edinburgh Assay Office
